When freedom of expression is threatened, curtailed or outlawed, artists and writers are compelled to find ever more inventive ways to evade authoritarian repression. New forms, new words, new means of resistance emerge at every turn and in every language. ‘In Other Words’, the PEN International Writers in Prison Committee (WiPC) Conference is an exploration and celebration of the resilience of art and literature in the face of a ‘post truth’ world.
It happens in Lillehammer, Norway from Wednesday 31 May to 2 Friday June 2017.
Norwegian PEN is delighted to be the official hosts of the 12th biennial WiPC meeting which will be held jointly with the ICORN Network Meeting and in close partnership with the City of Lillehammer and the Norwegian Festival of Literature.
Join other PEN WiPC members from across the globe, ICORN, – fellow writers and artists to explore and discuss how we can continue to strengthen the work we do together to protect writers at risk, and create a future in which freedom of expression can flourish.
Registration for the event is open to all PEN Centres and invited guests only. If you are attending as an ICORN guest please register on the ICORN website.

Accommodation and Venue
Lillehammer Hotel is the official hotel for both accommodation and official events of the Conference. Some events will take place at the venues of the Literature Festival in Lillehammer City. Further details will be available towards the end of May 2017.

Participation fee includes:
- Attendance to events in the WiPC programme
- Two nights’ accommodation at Lillehammer Hotel (check-in 31st May, Check out 2nd June) – unless the ‘no accommodation’ option has been selected.
- Breakfast at the Lillehammer Hotel – unless the ‘no accommodation’ option has been selected.

Accompanying Person € 230
Accompanying Person fee includes:
- x2 Dinner 31st May and 1st June
- Two nights’ accommodation at Lillehammer Hotel in a shared room (check-in 31st May, Check out 2nd June)
- Breakfast at the Lillehammer Hotel
- Festival pass for the 31st – 1st June tbc
(Accompanying Persons will share a room with the person they accompany)
Extra nights at the hotel
If you require extra nights at the hotel please specific within the online registration form by marking your check-in and check-out dates accordingly.
The costs of extra nights are:
- Single accommodation per person, per night: € 107
- Shared accommodation per person, per night: €73
Pass for the Norwegian Festival of Literature
A festival pass for the 31st May and 1st June are included in the cost of the registration fee. For extra days: Offer will follow soon.
The nearest airport is Gardermoen, Oslo Airport. From here you can take a direct train to Lillehammer, with a journey time of approximately 2 hours. Tickets can be purchased at NSB.no. Lillehammer hotel is a short walk (uphill!) from Lillehammer station or an even shorter taxi ride. Maps and walking instructions to follow! However, we do hope to arrange a free taxi service and volunteers to be at hand for your arrival. Please ensure you tell us, via the online registration form if you have any specific mobility needs.
An invoice will be sent to you shortly after we have received your registration. This will include payment for both the registration fee and any additional nights you have asked us to book on your behalf. All payments must be paid prior to the Conference and by the date specified on the invoice you receive.
Cancellation and Refund Policy
If you need to cancel your registration, please contact us on firstname.lastname@example.org as soon as possible. Cancellations made on or before 26th April will be fully refunded apart from a 15% administration fee.
Cancellations after 26th April will be subject to a 15% administrative charge and additional accommodation charges. The exact charge will be communicated after your cancellation request is received.
If you cannot attend because of illness or other such circumstances please contact your insurance company.
