Editor Abdel Karim Al-Khaiwani
International PEN, the non-political association of writers and journalist, reports that Abdel Karim Al-Khaiwani is serving a six year prison sentence following a sentence of 9th June 08. The terrorism charges are apparently unfounded and widely believed to be politically motivated. His writings express opposition to the government and this is considered part of any individual’s right to freedom of expression.
PEN calls for Al-Khaiwan’s immediate and unconditional release if detained in violation of Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Yemen is a signatory.
There is fear for his well-being in detention and we urgently ask Your Excellency to give assurances that he is being treated humanely.
With sincere best wishes
Member of Writers in Prison Committee
