PEN Norway supports the call by ten embassies in Turkey to release Osman Kavala
PEN Norway supports the call by the Norwegian Embassy in Turkey and the nine other embassies for the immediate release of political prisoner Osman Kavala.
In their statement on Monday 18 October 2021, Norway, Denmark, Canada, Finland, France, Netherlands, New Zealand, Germany, Sweden and the United States called on Turkey to release Osman Kavala immediately. The statement refers to the decision by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) declaring Kavala’s imprisonment unjustified.
The statement from the Norwegian Embassy in Turkey, on behalf of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, contributes to strengthening Kavala’s fight for justice.
PEN Norway has followed Kavala’s case closely since he was imprisoned four years ago, and has been present in all of Kavala’s hearings. As a part of PEN Norway’s Turkey Indictment Project, we have, with the support of lawyers and judges, evaluated two indictments against Osman Kavala and the other defendants in the Gezi Park trial, and our findings support the decision by the ECHR.
PEN Norway will be present at Kavala’s hearing on 26 November 2021 in Istanbul.
We hope he is released.
