2009: Egypt: Mosaad Abu-Fajr – Mosaad Suleiman Hassan

His Excellency Mohammad Hosni Mubarak

Your Excellency,
Mosaad Abu-Fajr – Mosaad Suleiman Hassan
PEN International’s Writers in Prison Committee is seriously concerned about the imprisonment without charge or trial for over a year of novelist, blogger and activist Mosaad Suleiman Hassan (pen-name: Mosaad Abu-Fajr). He seems to have been held since 26 December 2007 for his peaceful political activism. WiPC and PEN fears that he is held solely for the expression of his opinions and we call for his immediate and unconditional release from prison. We also seek information about his health condition and in fact where he is presently being held in detention.
We do this with reference to the UN International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Egypt is a signatory. We believe and fear that Mr Mosaad Suleiman Hassan is being held in for his peaceful and non-violent political activism in support of the Bedouins of Northern Sinai, and for his literary publications. His rights to do all of this are laid down in Article 19.
We fear that Mosaad Abu-Fajr’s condition calls for immediate and urgent action on the part of Egyptian authorities and we sincerely appeal to Your Excellency to give the matter your earliest attention.
Yours sincerely
