Your Excellency,
As a member of Writers in Prison Committee, Norwegian PEN, I am deeply concerned by the sentence served against Iranian Kurdish journalist Kaveh Javanmard.
The charges against him have not been made known, although he is believed to be held for his legitimate professional activities as a journalist. We are concerned about the trial of Javanmard, which did not appear to conform with international standards. I seek your assurance, Your Excellency, for seeking details of the charges against Javanmard, and of protection of journalists and human rights activists in Kurdish Iran.
We believe that journalist Kaveh Javanmard is detained solely for the peaceful exercise of his right to freedom of expression, and I call for his immediate and unconditional release in accordance with Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), to which Iran is a signatory.
Confident that you, Your Excellency, will take action accordingly, I remain,
Yours sincerely,
Trine Kleven
Member of Writers in Prison Committee, Norwegian PEN
