Prominent human rights lawyer, journalist and writer sentenced
The Writers in Prison Committee of PEN International condemns the eleven- year sentence handed down on 9 January 2010 to prominent writer, journalist and lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh. She was also banned from practicing law and from leaving the country for twenty years. PEN International considers that she is sentenced solely for the peaceful exercise of her right to freedom of expression as guaranteed by Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Iran is a party, and calls for her immediate and unconditional release.
