Oslo, 17.11.2014
Your Excellency,
Norwegian PEN welcomes the release of journalist Saba Azarpeik, but continues to call for any charges against her to be dropped. As far as we can see, her detention was solely a result from her peaceful exercise of her work as an independent journalist.
We are also concerned about the frequent reports of Iranian writers and journalists being arrested and/or imprisoned. We are calling for the immediate and unconditional release of all other writers currently detained in Iran solely in connection with their peaceful exercise of their right to freedom of expression and assembly, in accordance with Articles 9, 19 and 21 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Iran is a state party.
Yours sincerely,
Ms Brit Bildøen
Chair of Writers in Prison Committee
